Kaush Parameswaran is a lawyer practicing in commercial litigation at Scarfone Hawkins LLP, a firm with deep roots in the City of Hamilton. Over the years, he has been involved in a variety of not for profits and charitable causes. Kaush was recently appointed to the board of Wesley Urban Ministries – his first board appointment.
You were recently appointed to the board of Wesley Urban Ministries. Congratulations! What is your interest in this organization and what do you feel you bring to the board table?
Wesley Urban Ministries is an organization with a strong commitment to social justice, transitional housing, and other issues that should be important to all Hamiltonians. Their work focuses on segments of our population that are underserved. Housing security and programs to help people achieve their full potential are near and dear to me. An appointment with Wesley has been a great fit with my skills and interests.
I feel that with my professional background as a lawyer, I am able to use my experience to contribute to the important work that the board of directors does in support of Wesley’s mission. Additionally, I believe that as a young professional and as a visible minority, I add a different voice to the board.
What drives you to serve on not-for-profit boards?
Serving on a not for profit board is an excellent way to connect with the community that I live in. It is also rewarding as a great opportunity to learn and work collaboratively with others to influence and guide the organization.
For anyone looking to join a board, I would say that it is important that they first identify what type of organization they want to serve. Making sure that their values and interests align with those of the target organization is critical.
Were there any challenges you faced in joining a board? What advice would you give to others who are looking to get involved in governance and join a board?
When I was a new transplant to Hamilton, I lacked the local networks and resources to know what opportunities were available in Hamilton to effectively apply to these organizations. DiverseCity onBoard was able to bridge this gap and connect me with Wesley, which at that time, was also looking to grow and diversify their board. Additionally, as I had limited leadership experience with an organization the size of Wesley, it was intimidating applying for the board opportunities that were present. DiverseCity onBoard’s resources and training programs were essential in providing the tools I needed to join a board and contribute.
For anyone looking to join a board, I would say that it is important that they first identify what type of organization they want to serve. Making sure that their values and interests align with those of the target organization is critical.
